Professor Dr. İlker KAZAZ and Assoc. Dr. Dilek OKUYUCU , after the Sivrice (Elazığ) earthquake whose magnitude was Mw = 6.8 and which occurred on January 24, 2020, went to the earthquake area and gave a seminar on the principles of earthquake resistant building design in the light of their field studies and observations.
During the seminar, our faculty members shared their knowledge with many engineering faculty students and civil engineers from the industry in company. Explanatory information was given on the causes of the damage and the severity of the earthquake in rural and urban building types in the region affected by the earthquake. It was emphasized that the mudbrick and masonry building materials produced by the rural buildings were destroyed due to the intensity they were exposed to due to the proximity to the earthquake center, and they were destroyed or severely damaged.
At the seminar, Prof. Dr. İlker KAZAZ evaluated the damage situation of reinforced concrete structures in the city center of Elazığ and the impact of the earthquake. He pointed out the inadequacy of concrete strength and the effect of winding reinforcement on the earthquake behavior of reinforced concrete elements and added that if the severity of the earthquake felt in Elazig city center is a little higher the number of migrated buildings and loss of life will be much higher.
At the end of the conference, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Prof. Dr. Fatih YETİM presented a document by thanking Prof. Dr. İlker KAZAZ and  Assoc. Dr. Dilek OKUYUCU for their presentations.
